“Alabama Families Shouldn’t Pay the Bill” — Zeigler Responds to $4.1 Billion Federal Loan to Alabama Power

The U.S. Department of Energy announced a $4.1 billion loan to Alabama Power — part of a $26.5 billion package explicitly tied to soaring electricity demand from Big Tech data centers. Any customer savings must be approved by the Alabama PSC.

“The federal government just confirmed in writing what I have been saying throughout this campaign: Big Tech data centers are driving the expansion of Alabama’s power grid — and someone has to pay for it. Right now, that someone is you.”

Zeigler notes that President Trump himself called on tech companies to fund their own power infrastructure — and asks whether Alabama will have an independent watchman on the PSC, or a commissioner who looks the other way.

"I am running to put the PUBLIC back into the public service commission. I will be the Watchman for the people."

— Jim Zeigler, January 24, 2026

Big Tech Must Pay Their Own Way

Trillion-dollar technology companies want to build massive AI data centers, solar farms and other high-tech intrusions in Alabama — facilities that consume as much electricity and water as a mid-sized city.

The key question: who pays for all that new infrastructure? These are some of the wealthiest corporations in the world. Residential ratepayers should not be asked to subsidize their power needs and go short on water.

"If Big Tech creates the power shock, Big Tech should fund the power solution — not Alabama ratepayers."

Jim Zeigler will insist on cost allocation structures that protect residential ratepayers when large commercial projects require new infrastructure. He will serve as a Watchman, letting the public and local officials know about these intrusions before they are a done deal.
